Self-defence is about the right to protect our boundaries, our safety and well-being. We can be empowered to use our mind, our voice and our body to help us feel respected and safe.
Power2SelfProtect (P2SP) is an empowerment self-defence program designed to provide a range of evidence-based tools to empower, educate and equip women with the knowledge and skills needed to identify, avoid and defend against threats to their physical safety and well-being.
Designed by women for women, it is a unique and holistic self-defence program that takes into account the reality of gendered violence*. Unlike many martial arts programs/classes for women, which tend to use techniques more suited to male-to-male violence, P2SP is especially tailored to women and the situations they are more likely to face. We understand the need to adequately address the psychological and verbal aspects of self-defence, and have a clear focus on preventing and responding to harm from people we know, not just from strangers.
Importantly, we provide a non-judgemental and supportive environment for learning self-protection.
P2SP aims to contribute to the broader effort to reduce gendered violence and improve the well-being of individuals and communities in Australia.
The perpetrator of violence is always responsible for the act of violence. Being able to take responsibility for our safety and influence our well-being outcomes does not shift the responsibility for violence: it empowers us to live more freely and fully.
*In accordance with the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993), the word "violence" encompasses physical, sexual and psychological harm, including threats of harm and coercive and controlling behaviour.
